In Windows XP Pro how can you make the individual program menu's hide unless they are "commonly" used

    ex
like if you went to Programs
it would say "where have all my programs gone?"
it'd have the down arrow where you could click it to show the rest of the menus

how do you set that up in XP Pro?

I don't know that that is something you can configure. I think XP just keeps track of what programs you use a lot, and if it notices you aren't using certain ones a lot, it doesn't show them... I could be wrong though.

Windows XP does't do it automatically
It's been installed for a while now and it's not done it
I've looked in the start menu settings and i can't find anything

I was correct, but not clear.

NOTE: This may or may not be accurate if you don't have all the current Windows Updates.

    Here you go:

    1) Right-click on the start button
    2) Select "Properties"
    3) Click the "Start Menu" tab at the top of the Properties Panel
    4) Click the "Customize" button next to the active Start Menu (should be the only "Customize" button that is clickable).
    5) Scroll down to the bottom and check the box that says "Use Personalized Menus"

Also, the "Use Personalize Menus" option is only available if you are using the Classic Start Menu. But, even if you do select that option, there isn't a way to tell XP what programs you want hidden and which you want shown. Now, if there is a way, I've never heard of it.

BTW, this is straight from Microsoft's web site.

    and...

EDIT: BTW, here is the link to that article on the Microsoft Knowledge Base. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;255662

(that's because you can only use Personalized Menus with the Classic Start Menu, which is there for those who liked the Start Menu from previous versions of Windows, ie. all those listed at the bottom of that article.)

So the answer is. Enable Classic Start Menu. Enable the Personalized Menus and wait a couple of weeks and your commonly used apps will automagically show while the less used apps get hidden. :)
