I just recently breathed new life into my Ti Powerbook by adding a larger 120gb drive and 1gb of RAM. At 35, I will also soon be going back to school to finish up my AA and probably continue on from there. These two events are just coincidental in timing and not related. Last time I was taking classes, 11 years ago, the few people that did have laptops didn't bring them to class. Now, obviously, a lot more people are. I figure since I've got a decent one just kind of sitting here, I might as well put it to use and bring it with me. But then I got to thinking, for what, just to take notes?
And I'm not talking about using it to IM or play online in class, I'm talking about related to class. Yea, there are classes that require one and it would definitely come in handy for something like engineering or science. But just in general, if you take your laptop to class, what do you use it for and with what apps?

I don't usually bring my latop to class. I did bring it in my networks class for some C++ programming on ladder circuits and 8051 class when we were learning to program a PJRC board (used Windows XP via parallels since the prof. created his own 8051 program) and also in some of my EE labs (mostly to write drafts on my lab reports, etc...)

but as for taking notes, good old pencil and paper.

    I have a mbp

Dont usually bring it to class but I do for this one class in which the professor post up slides and she never post it online, so i type faster than i write.

Its too bad OSX dont have OneNote 2007. That program was awesome for notetaking.

    I graduated last year, but:

    12" iBook

Taking notes, reading powerpoint slides, cruising the web, chatting, watching movies at the library =X

It was a great tool but also a TERRIBLE distraction

Pen + paper ftw. Most of the students with laptops open during lecture are goofing off.

Can't really take notes with it in science classes or math classes if it has a lot of symbols.

Yep. I found that if I did want to organize my notes on my PC, I would need to take all the notes on pen + paper, then when I got back home, I would consolidate everything into one document that way it gave me time to think about how things were organized.

Brilliant!!! I think this makes the most sense. More time consuming, but better organization.

    :wtf:

anyways, pen and paper for class, laptops are too much of a distraction if they got open wifi.

one class i absolutely hated, me and one of my friends both had laptops, she'd take notes one day and i'd surf the web, then we'd swap roles the next day...

he'd put up the picture, we'd google search it, put it in our notes then take down whatever he said...

worked out well...just emailed the notes to each other after each class....
