did the strobe darken the background or photoshop? he used a single strobe into a softbox and a reflector. if the strobe did it, how? i cant seem to get the background of an image to darken when it is lit up

    they look pretty heavilly 'shopped.

but anyway, its all about proportion. the more light you have (ideally on subject) the more you can stop down your camera. Strobes can not light up the sky so eventually your subject will overpower the background.

    try:
    putting your camera on M,
strobe on M and full power,
giving your subject a pair of sunglasses,
    point at subject,
adjust exposure until you stop loosing parts to white hell.

and eventually if you have enough light and can focus it you will get a black background.

you get this with macro shots all the time because of the intensity of the light that close to the strobe.

    like so

you're getting the dark background because you are underxposing the ambient light while you're properly exposing your subject with the strobe.

so it basically works by having so much light on the subject that you run an extremely high shutter speed which will underexpose the background?

The strobe overpowers the ambient light.

the way I do it is I meter for the background, keeping in mind, your max sync speed is going to be 1/200th sec (or more depending on the camera) then I adjust my settings to underexpose the baground by atleast two stops. Then I manually adjust my strobe to overpower the ambient. usually takes me a couple of shots to chimp since I don't own a light meter yet.

He has two, one on a cord attached to the camera, and then one on a tripod slaving off of the one on the cord

Set up the shot to be about 2 stops below correct exposure for the background (or expose it correctly if it's late) and then use strobes to expose your subject properly.

There's not that much processing in those pictures.
