I've been doing some research and noticed that people are saying the 4th gens are better than the 5th gens. What's the reasoning behind this?

I like the look of the 5th gen. Does the 4th gen have a better engine or something?

4th Gen VTEC's are impossible to find in good shape, otherwise I'd get one.

All of the 97+ preludes are 195 hp for the base model and 200 for the SH.

    92-96 they had

    The S- 135 hp SOHC
    The Si-160 hp DOHC
and in 93 they introduced the VTEC version which had a 190hp DOHC vtec engine(h22a1).

The 4th gen vtec has similar 0-60 and quarter mile times to the type R. I personally like the styling of the 4th gens better, but I have a 4th Gen Si, so that might be why.

I'd like to get a 2002 model SH if I decide to ditch looking for a 4dr sport lux sedan.

Is that the 190hp one? I don't know my Honda engine codes well enough.

True Story. I like 4th gen looks better which is why I have one. If you insist on a 5th gen get a type S instead of a type SH if you plan on mods. Type S is lighter overall and responds better to turbos/bolt ons. If you plan on doing only minor mods then get a SH because it will be faster than the S.

5th gen prelude is probably the nicest looking FWD car to ever come out of japan

No H23 is the one that went in the Si. The 160 hp dohc.

I've never heard of the TypeS prelude. Just SH or regular. Does it have 200HP also?

both 97+ base and type SH have 200HP on a standard transmission and 195HP for auto

Type-S is 220 HP, it has a higher compression ratio and different cams (there may be more but thats all I know). But as far as I know they were only available in japan.

The h23a is the non-vtec it's 160hp and 155ft/tq I believe. It is much more responsive to mods though so most prefer it over the h22a which is the ~190hp Vtec.

It has a decent amount of torque for a honda (156tq), i dont consider it to be fast. But with just an intake mine ran a 15.7.

Type S is the same as the SH, just lighter. It is what the base model prelude for 97+ is known as.

I never lost a race in a stock 97 5spd lude to ANY 4th gen I ever raced. They supposedly had 5 less hp, but weighed significantly less...Never saw that weight disadvantage the 5th gen should have - the autos SUCK though, REALLY slow...

A friend had a few motors in his Del Sol - the first was a 96 H22 - it made 13 less to the wheels than the next H22 he had - not sure on it's year, but it was 97+ - his last motor was a H23block that I think had the H22 head - never dyno'd it all motor - it was turbo - t3/t4 and 320 to the wheels :big grin: LS-1 killa
