grab some food and take a few minutes to read this study/article. This is one of Lee Zimmerman's papers he did for his Masters. A very good read.

From what I gather, it basically said that you need an ME, DE, and GPP day for bench, and that bands and chains are good for DE. Also, conjugation > Nonlinear Periodization > Linear Periodization

Also, on bench, I have good form until 95% ish of my 1RM, then my arms flare and pull away from my body no matter what I do. Is there a specific muscle (rear delts or lats?) that I should be training, or is it just the kind of thing I need to practice with?

lol, basically its recommending you to do West Side Barbell's program...which has undoubtedly been the best for some time now anyway.

its the reasoning behind using Louie's methods, as opposed to the usual just do it explanation from most wsb disciples. it also breaks down the other approaches to training

Its a good read but yeah, doesn't matter to most people here that can go by with no periodization whatsoever, including myself

Isn't flaring at the sticking point a good thing? I'm talking raw, btw.

Is it? My shoulders definitely feel a lot worse after flaring.

Well I don't mean in terms of health, more as in stronger form. It's not accentuaded tho, like in geared lifting, it's pretty natural I think to flare out a little :dunno:

Under conclusion this makes me think that he doesn't know which is best.

Therefore, selecting a strength training program with the goal of increasing maximum bench pressing ability is a complex and confusing decision. It would take many years to physically try each of the systems that have been investigated due to the long-term commitment required to actually determine the effectiveness of a program. Most athletes do not have the time or desire to do this due to the “down time” of training spent learning a new system while still remaining in the competitive arena. In this literature review, two distinctly different methods of training were analyzed. With so many variations of resistance training protocols studied, published, and practiced, the question remains as to which system will yield the greatest strength gains
