so i unlocked and activated my iPhone and put my sim card in it. i was holding off on putting a data plan off b/c im using wifi everywhere. well i just looked at my account online and they changed my phone to an iPhone and the regular data plan is not available, only the iPhone data plan. i tried to add the iphone data plan but it says it encountered a problem and i need to call customer service

im trying to avoid renewing a contract and keeping my business discount so i was going to add the regular data package.

you think i can put my sim back in my old phone for a bit and change it to the regular plan?

anyone else run a regular data plan on an iPhone?

Ouch. I had a friend that was going to do something similar with AT&T and his HTC Tilt. I'll let him know not to bother.

pwned, you should've changed the iPhone's IMEI to that of your old phone using ZiPhone :hs:

actually, if you do this now it might not be too late :dunno:

its along the same lines as this
    http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1349405

att is trying to make it where you cannot take your iPhone sim and put it in another phone or take another sim and put it in the iPhone.

I may change the imei when i get home

i texted my friend that works at att and he said he can add just the iPhone data plan but it asks for the imei which will renew a contract.

it doesnt make sense to renew a contract for simply changing a feature or phone

Is that even legal? I know they can require a new contract when giving a discount on hardware, but if you bought a phone 3rd party, I don't think they can require a contract renewal.

i wouldnt think so, and i refuse to renew a contract for that reason

i just called cs and they said that i could add ONLY the feature if i activate it through itunes, or i could take it into a local store and they should be able to do it. i highly doubt it.

im not trying to cheat anyone out of anything, i just want to add the iPhone data plan TO MY IPHONE! why is that so hard for them?

Apple already has some b.s. going on, and at&t certainly wasn't a good carrier prior to the iPhone... so the two of them mixed together is just an absolute monstrosity.

    this is some bullshit

so i called customer service back to see if i get a different story. of course i did.

the guy said that i need a new sim card, one specific to the iphone, then i'll have to activate it through itunes (creating a new contract). he said theres no way to add it on his end.

this is bullshit. they shouldnt be able to do this

not really. i bought a used phone and im trying to add a feature to it. im not getting any benefit from att so im not signing a contract. no different than any other phone. its just that this is the iphone so they are changing it.

seriously, clone the IMEI of your old phone to your iPhone. Then stop using the iPhone anyway for a couple of weeks and switch back to your old one. If they keep giving you shit show them that you're not using an iPhone and call them out for trying to push you into an iPhone data plan (or whatever). After you've laid low for a bit, try using the IMEI-cloned iPhone again and see if you get tagged. I'm almost positive that they can only reliably tell what phone you're using by IMEI, so you should be ok after you wait it out. Unlocked iPhone + regular AT&T data plan should work just fine. After all, it does on T-Mobile (minus visual voicemail).

Also, never try to use that old phone on AT&T at the same time you're using the IMEI-cloned iPhone, that will probably fuck some shit up and could land you in trouble.

Otherwise, I'm pretty damn sure they can't force a change of contract on you, but they probably also don't have to support any device they don't want to on their network, so you might be stuck if you try to fight this. :dunno: AT&T blows.

By the way, before AT&T tagged your phone, did visual voicemail work on the iPhone? Given that you used it on an account that wasn't considered an official "iPhone account".

so did visual voicemail work while you were on a non-AT&T-activated iPhone with a regular data plan?

AT&T is a son of a bitch. I have a $68.xx plan and I WON'T be eligible for an iPhone upgrade since it doesn't cross the $69.xx threshold

Glad you got everything working. I love my iPhone. I have never had a problem with AT&T, had them since 1997.
