Does no one supply these any more?

I was thinking of upgrading my hard drive on my sony to something quieter and with more capacity, but i can only find ATA100 drives.

    Whats involved?

I hear that would be a waste of time as the drive would run at 66% performance.

I wouldnt mind as long as it wont make it worse than the drive i have right now.

A 4GB drive designed for ATA100 will go faster than a 4GB drive designed for ATA66, even if the IDE controller is only capable of ATA66. The reason is simply the newer drives spin faster and are more efficient. It won't be worse than what you have now.

    Hmmm, good good, thanks.

Can you confirm that ATA100 drive will fit an ATA66 connection?

I think i will go for it if it at least matches the performance i have now.

Honestly, I can't. I can tell you that there is no difference on a desktop, but I can't be certain on a laptop. There are SOME laptops that do not conform to standards, you didn't mention which one you have.

best bet would to bring it to the place where u plan to get the hdd (if online, post models, etc) and see what they can do for u.

    i know all the compaq's, dell's, hp's, sony's have been standard.

but if u got like a gateway, or some other minor brand, it may be a problem. but who knows.

    gl :big grin:

I would personally be rather suprised to see that an ATA100 drive would not work on an ATA66 laptop. But like the others... I make no promises.
