Here's a shot from yesterday's transit of Mercury across the sun. When I found out how rare this was to capture I ran out and bought the last solar filter in town. From what I read, one can only capture this image 16 times a century, and that's if the weather cooperates.

The big dark spot due west is a sunspot, as are the two minor spots due east. Mercury is bottom left center, if that makes sense.

This image is a stack of 10 individual exposures taken with a dRebel at ISO 100, 1/1600 sec, through an 8" f/4 Meade Shmidt-Newtonian telescope.

I took over 200 images that day so if everything goes to plan I will make an animated gif of the transit.

Unfortunately your picture isn't coming through for me, but that French guy has some amazing work!

Question - A while back I took like, 10 x 30 sec exposures of Orion and tried stacking them to see if I could get a little of the nebula to show, but without success.

What technique do they use in PS to stack photos? :dunno:

That sucks that the picture isn't coming through for you.

You can stack photos in PS but it's tedious. After manually aligning two images you change the opacity of one of them to %50 before flattening. This effectively averages every pixel. If an individual pixel is noise then its output is reduced, if it is actual signal then it is amplified. It takes forever to stack more than 2 photos this way.

I used a program called Registax to do my stacking. It is way more efficient at stacking multiple photos.

Thanks for the compliments! I'm still working hard on the animated gif. That french site makes me want to get an H-alpha filter so I can capture prominences!

the Texas Astronomical Society or whatever was on campus at UTD for that. I didn't have a lens mount for the 'scopes and no one had a Canon one there. :wtc:

Yeah, that's the result of the atmosphere and the telescope heating up, which changes the focus point. My scope is an f/4 so the focal plane is razor thin. I didn't catch it changing on me until it was too late and I didn't think it would be right to clone it out in PS.

Eventually, I'll go back and color balance each frame and realign them so that the sun's disc doesn't move. But this one has already taken me 2 full days to put together, so I think I need a break for awhile.

No, your whole website is blocked by the smartfilter here. Is it huge or is it emailable? If so, JaimeZX (at) aol -dawt- com. :x:

Smartfilter? More like dumbfilter. My site is so innocuous it makes Mother Theresa look like Paris Hilton. Or something.

    Oh and, emailed'd you.
