I am relatively new to the world of firearms so please bear with me.

Is it legal to own a rifle such as this?

only if it were made before 1987 and you submit to a federal background check and pay a 200 dollar tax stamp. For more information, google "NFA form 3"

an "assault weapon" however, is a made up term for any rifle that looks scary, such as AR-15s or AK-47s. These are quite legal to own in most states, and can be bought at your local gun store. The price varies depending on a lot of factors and you will have to undergo a state level background check.

    what are you talking about.
according to Federal Law, there really is no such thing as an assault rifle anymore.

Yes you can own the RRA M4gery unless you live in CA or any other state that has a specific AW ban. Also, you have to meet the specific criteria for long gun ownership in your state.

I think its best to first ask what you have in mind when you say assault rifle.

Also has to have been registered, if you "find" an old one, too late time to get it destroyed.

assault rifle = ak47 clones, or M16 clones, then yes u can own them

assault rifle = fully automatic, then yes u can own them, but u need to jump through hoops.

i thought the term "assault rifle" used by most is:

removable magazine, pistol grip, adjustable/folding stock, forward grip.

Why do people call them assault rifles? The term "assault rifle" was actually originally invented by Hitler.

They are referred to as a rifle or firearm, or they are referred by their actual names. If you walk into a gun shop and go "I want to buy an assault rifle" they'll look at you like  :ugh2: :weak:.

Thread starter, yes you can own a semi auto one with no hassles unless your state has bans on them. What state you live in?

Full auto is a bit tougher and a lot more expensive but you still can own them.

You can walk into a sporting good store and buy a hunting rifle that is far more powerful than any AR-15, it's just they don't look scary so no one makes a big deal about it like they do with OMGBLACKASSAULTRIFLESCALL911.

Once you become more enamored with the gun community, go to a few gun shows, read a few gun rags, you'll quickly realize that AR-15's really are NOT that big of a deal and they have been blown so far out of proportion by the media.

bah, i feel like this is like the whole thing calling a magazine a clip

assault rifle = assault weapon (wrong)
assault rifle = AR 15, 10, M4 variants, etc. (right)

Instead of just answering his question and telling him that what are commonly called "assualt rifles" are just semi-auto rifles that look "scary", you try to be all cute with it and turned the thread into shit...

i was just trying to understand his idea of assault rifle. its like that dude on the normal forums that said he could get a M16 for $600. once had a kid tell me he could buy a fully auto Ak47 for $400, i assured him he cannot and he kept arguing with me, i told him i would pay him twice that if he could buy it and re-sell it to me.
