I came into a tattoo shop and saw some dude with a Swastika getting something done. I was going to ask some questions about getting a Star of David made, but changed my mind. It felt wierd to me, and I really didnt care to see the reaction from the people in the shop.

I dont want to assume / lable anyone as something they are not, so I want to ask this:

***what do you guys think I should have done, or should do in the future?***
    :wavey:

wait, so you didn't want to label the guy with a swastika as a Nazi?
and you wanted to talk about getting the Star of David - to piss him off? or cuz you really did want it?

I'm not sure that I can make sense of this part:

I think he really wanted the star of david, but noticed an artist tattooing a swaztica, so he changed his mind? I think his question is, should he have assumed that the artist is down with the whole nazi thing, or that he was just doing what the nazi wanted. :dunno:

I would go elsewhere. The swastika is more than a religious symbol, it's a symbol of hate and intolerance... I would want my tattoo artist to have more self respect than that. But that's just my opinion.

i would ask...i would not have asked at that time tho. when i got tattooed thats something we were talking about...the artist said she would do a swastika on someone, meanwhile she was doing a cross on me. she said just cuz shes tattooing it doesnt mean she agrees with it or anything, but shes being paid to give a tattoo and thats all...so she said if thats what they want, then thats what she will do...in your case tho, it would have been awkward asking about a star of david tattoo in front of a guy with a swastika tat so i would have just went back another time.

    My uneducated opinion:
If he is a good artist, he should stay busy enough doing tattoo's other than swastikas; therefor, he either agrees with nazi-ism or he isn't all that good. :dunno:

    Does that make any sense?

[EDIT] And of course he has a right to his opinion and belief, but so does the thread-starter, so "Who gives a shit?" is kinda contradictory.

Just cause someone tattoos a swastika doesn't mean they're a bad artist. :ugh:

They could be the greatest artist in the world, but if you're Jewish, would you want someone with a swastika on their arm to tattoo you? I would probably take my business elsewhere.

If the tattooer had a swastika on his or her own arm, then I'd hesitate - but if client(s) in the past had asked them to draw one, it doesn't seem relevant. It's his/her job and they're asked to put ink on a skin, not to relate emotionally or mentally to every tattoo they do. If that were the case I'm sure artists would turn down a lot of morons for the kind of tattoos you see out there.

You stated that "If he is a good artist, he should stay busy enough doing tattoo's other than swastikas". Your statement makes no sense at all. Someone comes in and wants a swastika done so he's supposed to tell them to fuck off and go somewhere else? Why should he push his views on someone who is paying his bills? We have excellent artists at our shop and we've done numerous swastika tattoos. We may not agree with the customer and we'll try and talk them out of it but we're certainly not going to refuse to do their work. :dunno:

Fair enough. Everything I know about tattoo shops is based on TV shows like Inked and Miami Ink... I guess that's just not an accurate portrayal of reality.

VERY VERY unaccurate. Here's a few things about Miami Ink that most people don't know..

    - they weren't really friends before the show
    - the house they live in is a rental
    - the cars are all rentals
    - they're only there about 3 months out of the year
    - they have numerous other 'street' artists that tattoo when they're not there
    - Garver, Ami and Darren own other shops in LA, CT and NY

Ami's shop is in NY (or at least it was). His is the only one that I"m not positive if he still owns. I know the other 2 still own their shops.
