Service Pack 2 Expected to "Break" Poorly Written Applications

Our experiences with SP2 (the betas and technical previews) have been mixed. Some machines experienced no problems at all. Others were impacted so badly that we uninstalled the service pack. Reports from our readers echo that: it seems that the SP2 experience has ranged all the way from "it broke my computer and I couldn't reboot" to "smooth sailing all the way."

Industry experts are predicting that when the final version of SP2 is released, it will "break" a number of applications - but that the apps it affects shouldn't have been written that way to begin with. Of course, some application vendors whose products compete with Microsoft's will accuse Microsoft of breaking their software on purpose. What do you think?

So does that mean Windows itself will break, its one of the most poorly written applications around.

I know that is not the point of the article

My guess is Service Pack 2a is not far behind...

Is that a statement or a question? Make up your mind.

    :ugh:

SP2's arrival will require a new installation; at which time, people can assess what 3rd party software is compatible and what isn't.

the benefits should (hopefully) outweigh it breaking some little applications.

it will be interesting to see how many posts we get on OT from people bitching about how sp2 broke their bonzai buddy and gator programs

I'm waiting on a NAS device to arrive for my house so that I can offload a nightly image, and then I'll apply this ;)

I have SP2 installed, and it works pretty good for me. no broken app's at all. Oh, and if any of you want it, go to http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com and you can select an option to see any beta downloads. Overall, I like SP2, but I do notice that there are many things that indicate that it still needs refining.

It depends if you want to deal with beta software. I don't really notice very many problems (the only one that I notice is my computer will freeze when it comes back from a low power state). But other than that, it is good. The new security things could be good incentive if you need to worry about stuff like that. And most importantly, if you have some really old apps, they probably will make things messy, so always be ready to do a format c:

not really any new looks. They did a little tweaking to some things, but for the most part, everything looks the same. And I would say I feel my computer is a little faster than just with SP1.

I'll wait a few weeks to get SP2, to see what people like and not like.

My usual answer is if you have to ask, WAIT. Its currently in pre-release which means they are still expecting some bugs, let the people who pay that much attention to the happenings of MS deal with them.

As mentioned above wait a month or so after the final release before you worry about it. As they say there is a fine line between leading edge and bleeding edge.
