i was all sympathetic until i saw this:

Botta was deployed to Afghanistan for about seven months in 2002. He then had three deployments to Iraq - about a month in 2003, three months in 2004 and 15 days later that year.
Army spokeswoman Maj. Cheryl Phillips noted that Army Reserve units deploy for 12 consecutive months, and that Botta had only accumulated about 10 nonconsecutive months of deployment.

Although not American I would suggest it depends on the term of the contract he signed.

I would imagine he would have preferred a 12 month call, the terms detailed in the article would basically destroy his career. No employer is going to sign up for someone that disappears for a few months each year.

If he signed up for it, and is a required skill then :dunno: sucks to be him.

The enlistment contract says nothing about limits on the duration or frequency of deployments.

We have laws that are designed to protect the civilian jobs of Guard and Reserve members due to this reason.

True. But there is nothing to stop an employer from deciding to terminate him for something that they not otherwise fire him for. It happens all the time.

Right to work states...for the fucking lose.

I would still sue. It would cost them more to hire a lol-yer then to settle.

takes money to sue. most people that don't have a job can't afford to sue - unless they agree to give the lawyer a percentage. I sued once over some defective plumbing (every single fitting in the house on the hot water side disintegrated). Lawyers got 40%. After all was said and done, I almost (but not quite) broke even.

yeah, although DOD policy at least used to be that you couldnt be forced to deploy in the reserves more than once every 5 years.

either way. shipping someone back and forth for 15 days or a month is fucking bullshit

What is so hot about this guy that he gets tagged for all these "emergency" deployments?

I was sympathetic until he determined that he could help his country more by being a contractor w/a degree.

Actually nevermind, I wasn't sympathetic because he signed and has 8 years, not to mention he signed AFTER 9/11.

I have zero sympathy for him. MANY reservist and guard members would love to have shorter deployments. I understand that he finally has a job that he likes and that makes him a nice salary... But he went into this with his eyes open and he has been very fortunate with the short deployments when most of his Army buddies are stuck for year+ deployments.

you dont just blindly enlist though. theres reasonable expectations

deployments for longer than a year are at least common, and its steady income. i wouldnt sign up for the reserves if it prevented me from living a somewhat normal civilian life. i mean, they dont feed or house me for 28 days out of the month, so how is right to fuck with my ability to have a steady job in that time.

They had better have documentation (a disicipline notice or write up if you will) of the infraction that caused his termination.....

If not he might just own the company

Not in a Right To Work state. You can be fired for no reason at all. And that is the reason they will cite if asked.

Dont work....a right to work state is not a free for all for employers....I used to work in nevada a MEGA right to work state because of the Casinos

One well placed complaint with Federal labor board and/or the Governor of that state and that Company and or Manager gets into an assload of Trouble

I had a complaint about a Manager who demoted me because he didnt want a Shift Manager "in and out like a revolving door"

He was demoted a few months later :o
