I hear everyone in the Army has to do a ruck march at least once a year. Most of the time is is 35lbs or so.

I would like to work on that just for fitness reasons mainly. I'm pretty sure a normal backpack wouldn't hold up to the abuse. What would you suggest? I've got plenty of books here that I can use for the 35lbs of weight.

go buy one of the dirt cheap alice rucks on ebay or somewhere. if i can find the new molle ACU pattern rucks for $50, im sure you can get the vietnam era alice rucks for like $20.

I assume I need the frame and ruck sack? EBay has lots of listings for both separately.

the army doesn't have a requirement for this, but it's a popular thing for corps/division level units on down to implement as a standard.

anyways, get one of the old school ALICE packs off of ebay and make sure it comes with a frame. make sure you keep it hoisted up towards your shoulders so it's not fucking up your back when you're rucking.

i usually carry two sets of boots, my four sapi plates, kevlar, iba, and other random shit that comes out to around 50-60lbs.

18th air borne corps standards hooah! :)

ALICE packs are better than the new ones for what it's worth. They have a better center of gravity.

Cool thanks. I've just been searching on ebay for a few days, and the best I've found is this: http://cgi.ebay.com/OD-Alice-Field-...emQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item3efa472e2a

    $40 for shipping alone FTL.

Is this what I need? Anything else?

I've also read that you want to wear un-cushioned boots. Does that mean taking the insole out and walking on the bare wood? Or is that referring to those who buy Dr. Scholl's inserts. I've got a pair of boots that are comfy, but only have the inserts that came with them.

careful on the alice frames. we used those in basic and without an IBA on, the center piece of the frame dug into my spine.

and for boots, just wear whatever is comfortable for you. some people ruck in issues without soles and have no problems. for me, unless i tape up my feet, i get serious hot spots and blisters after the 5-7 mile mark regardless of the boot/sole/insert combination i use.

Add more weight. For our weekly ruck for PT we have to have a minimum of 65lbs. So start light but add weight everytime.
