I know the unit she belonged too. A lot of her unit's officers were my neighbors on post. They knew they were deploying for like a year.

I've seen this stunt happen in the past. "I'll play it off like i'm deploying, and then last minute I'll just tell them I can't".

They just want to continue making a pay check...

yeah, I'm placing the blame on the Army.

she had a legitimate problem and they fucked up in handling it.

from the articles I read about this, she got the family care plan only to have her mom back out. then she was unable to find someone else.

dishonorable discharge. while failing to serve her country, she failed to care for her child.

    :ugh:
she actually did her duty to her country and her child. She couldnt help it that her mom basically gave up and said she couldnt keep the child. 3ID is going back to Iraq and she serves in a nonessential MOS, she could easily continue to serve on rear detachment

I respect her for the fact that she brought up the issue and instead of placing her child in foster care she decided to miss movement. Lets face it, they aren't doing much and she wouldnt be missed if she stayed in Ft Stewart.

3ID is notorious for pulling shit like this. Hell they made people that were paralyzed and in wheelchairs fly out to Kuwait only to be returned to based

If you are a commander and cant make and ETP for this kid, then you arent fit to command. Missing movement for a nonlegitimate reason = jailtime and her still losing her son.

edit: I dont know why the article says they were going to afghanistan. my buddies from 3ID are in balad right now and one of my current classmates is going there next month

    shit happens.

she had a care plan, it fell through. It sucks but her command did a horrible job in dealing with it.

like I said, shit happens. I honestly doubt she make a conscience decision to be a single parent. Even if she did, she had a family care plan. It sucks that her plan as well as her life isn't fleshing out exactly as scheduled, but tough shit.

sometimes you can't plan for everything. this is one of those cases. The Army could have handled this WAY better.

i guess its just more of a difference of opinion on people. I like to think the best of people based off of my own personal experiences, and my own successes and failures and how i've personally responded to them.

a lot of people seem to like to think the worst of other people, which you seem to be doing.

Her mom said she couldn't take care of the child b/c she ran a family day care? What the fuck kinda shitty ass excuse is that? That's like a veterinarian telling you he can't board your dog cuz he's a veterinarian...:ugh:

You don't even get dishonerable discharge for drug charges these days. Instead it's an Administrative Seperation. AKA: Don't put the military on your applications when searching for jobs. Shit, we still have a guy on our ship who went AWOL for 90 days, decided to come back, popped positive for THC and all they did at his Court Martial was bust him down to E-1 and send him back. They didn't drug test our Reactor department for like 4 months because of the hours they were being forced to work and like half them were strung out on Coke just trying to get kicked out because they hate they're life.

Then there's the situations like the bullshit situation that is the topic of this thread. My good friend Kathryn, who has two children, has a husband who is also Navy; they're both at sea going commands. BOTH his command and our command have turned down the paper work to change one them to a shore billet. Her kid's stay with a close friend of the family right now, and most of this past year, since we plan to deploy here on Jan 2nd. They were with that friend most of this year too because we JUST got back from our last deployment in July...

I fucking love the military... love it.

Can't wait for my enlistment to end.... fuck this bullshit.

that is a complete disappointment especially since the military tries to tout itself as being family friendly. I feel sorry for the children involved
at least the parents have reliable/trustworthy people they can leave their children with.

wow that quote changes things a bit, but we have to wonder how trustworthy or stable this guy is. Also she is a cook in the Army, meaning she has absolutely 0 skills for the real world. Staying in the Army is the best thing she can do for herself and her child. The healthcare benefits, and advancement in pay/rank will be more than if she were a cook in the civilian world

ran a day care and also took full time care of other sick people.

you don't know her exact situation so why are you so quick to judge?

why are so quick to let her off the hook and send someone else? If feel strongly enough about it, maybe you should volunteer to take her spot.

im not "letting her off the hook". I'm just saying that shit happens, its a pretty legit excuse, and they could have dealt with this a lot better.
