I'm in ROTC now and I have to submit my wish list for branches soon. I want a branch that will translate into the civilian world well so I'm considering aviation. I'm thinking of being an aviation officer for 4 years then getting a job as a commercial airline pilot when I get out. How much will this experience in the Army help me get a job? Will I get all the required licenses in the Army that I need for a civilian career?

    In for this.

When I get back from Iraq, I'm thinking about doing a direct commission. I want to get into aviation so I can also be a helicopter pilot for a law enforcement agency.

even if he was in the top 10%, there isn't much chance for a CO to get an AV slot. Also, if you go AV then I think the minimum contract is longer than 3-4 years. At least that's how it is in the Air Force.

Unless you get fixed wing, which is rare, you will only be rated in rotary and getting a fixed wing license will be completely on you. I am not completely sure about the Commissioned Officer required service time after completing flight school, but for Warrants it is 6 years upon the completion of flight school.

6 years last I heard, and you can come out of Army flight school with a commerical rotary instrument rating. Fixed wing slots are more open to officers than warrants, but they are still very very hard to get. The JCA will open up more slots, but they will be very competitive.

Thanks for the info. I'm hoping I'll be able to get this branch, but it does not sound good.

I'm trying to keep my options open so I'm looking into a bunch of different career paths, but the FBI is still on my mind.

I don't know how I rank in my battalion. My school is a detachment from the host school so we don't see the majority of the battalion most of the time. My APFT score now is around 280 and I'm going to try to get closer to 300 by the end of the summer. My grades are not very good though, I have around a 2.8 cumulative. Reason for that is my freshmen year I was stupid and did bad, but have gotten at least a 3.0 for my sophomore year.
