PHEONIX (AP) ― A committee of the Arizona Legislature is weighing arguments made today over a proposal to let people with permits to carry concealed weapons bring guns to K-12 schools, community colleges and universities.

The Senate's Judiciary Committee listened to more than two hours of testimony about the proposal, but didn't take a vote.

The testimony came four days after a gunman opened fire during a lecture at Northern Illinois University, killing five young people before turning a gun on himself.

Supporters say the permit-holders should be allowed to carry guns at schools so they can defend themselves and others if a gunman starts shooting people and police haven't yet arrived at the scene.

Opponents say police officers urgently responding to a school shooting might have difficulty distinguishing innocent permit-holders from the gunman.

I can understand their concern. But then again, the bad guys should be pretty obvious to spot.

if that's the only argument against it then IMHO its not enough to stop this from passing.

Its not that I can't see a cop responding to a shooting and seeing someone with a gun and thinking they are the shooter, but it would be little harder to see the cop going straight to killing him without any confrontation.

Personally I'd accept the risk that the cops might mistake me for the shooter. I'd rather be able to defend myself if a confrontation was the arise before the cops were responding, even with the risk of being mistaken for the shooter.

Then again I doubt the actions, posture and body language of a shooter and a person defending themselves is anywhere near the same. Plus the argument doesn't work off campus why should it work on campus?

Considering the response time of the police on average. It's also possible that the perp could already be taken down and the CHL holder would have holstered already.

For some reason I just got a mental picture of some crazy kid hunched over int he corner with all his weapons laying around him, with the ccw holder sitting at the desk, eating a pepperoni pizza, sipping on a slurpy, and reading a copy of Guns and Ammo

plus, if someone was involved in a defensive shooting, once the threat is eliminated, wouldn't the first thing be to call the police and identify who you are so you DONT get fucked up by cops?

Hell, the thought of moving to AZ crossed my mind when I read this thread. I had a teacher last semester say she wished her students(she knew I was a gun owner) carried in class. She pretty much asked me to, without saying anything that would get her in trouble. Damn cool teacher. Good one, too.

I local board I read is debating this topic. Someone came on and started throwing out statistics, and I was wondering what some more knowledgeable people here had to say about the comment (he is obviously against guns on campuses):

Its interesting in reading the gun facts PDF. If you look closely at it, there have been previous court decisions that have upheld the 2nd amendment and even go as far as implying that the govt cant even restrict fully automatic weapons. Here is an part from one of the cases mentioned:

I put in the bold parts. But it sounds like that the right to keep arms is for the individual so that they can be part of the militia and that if they show up they would be expected to show with their own weapons of the kind commonly used by the military. That COULD be taken to mean that fully auto weapons and anything else that is "military" is our right to have and they cant take it from us.

That has already happened, so its not coming back, but it is interesting to read.
