I'm told the best path to good car audio is to replace:

Speakers -> Head Unit -> Get a subwoofer,

so based on that, i decided to start looking for some decent speakers.

I have a 2006 Passat without the dynaudio system, and the folks at best buy say i have 6.5" speakers in front and back, so i searched around for what looked like a good combination of quality and price point and came up with:

    Alpine Type-R SPR-17C 6.5" coaxial speakers.

Does anyone have any opinion about alpine audio? If you dont like these speakers do you have any better recommendation within the same price point?

Cant help but ask...by all the technical specs they seem inferior...why the preference?

When it comes to speakers, there's only one person who can tell you what's good. that's yourself. Best advice is to just go around and listen to different speakers and see what you like best.

I think alpine's are okay... but there's definitely better. You'll also have to take into account that your acoustic environment in your car will be different too. But seriously. just go and listen to a ton of speakers and buy what sounds best to you.

And do NOT buy from best buy.

    Being louder doesn't mean better.

The transition between woofer and tweeter is seamless and the Type S's just sound good all around for what they are.

agreed. then I don't think it matters if you get a sub or speakers after. But head unit should be first since it is what is going to process your sound.

I always go HU --> Subs --> Speakers

    Though

I think it should be HU --> Speakers --> Subs

Your new speakers may provide the low end that you are looking for in a basic system.

good quality speakers will actually have less on the low end.

unless you get 8" components :mamoru:

if you put good spks in w/ a stock HU it's be like getting a plasma screen w/ a fucking VCR attached.

6.5's will fit in your car just fine. You'll probably need spacers to hold the speakers out from the door cards, though.

I really like my Infinity Reference speakers (6.5" woofers and 1" tweeters), but if you use the crossovers that come with them you'll definitely want to install a sub too, or at least bypass the crossovers for driving the woofers. Unless you don't like bass, that is. Infinity tends to be very careful about not trying to drive their speakers outside their efficiency range (or WTFever the correct term is), but the upshot of that is the bass sucks without a sub.

Type S's are a good budget Co-Ax. Dunno

Not everyone needs Rainbow in their car to be happy.

:mamoru: sorry brew, didn't mean to hurt your feelings.

anyways, the type-s are pretty nice at that price range. the kicker KS series actually sounds pretty good as well, and they are comparable.
