I have been thinking about getting a sleeve on my left arm...i have 3 other tats but they are fairly small. I was playing with the idea of getting a japanese koi scene but do you think its a bit common/over-done ?

Koi tattoos are incredibly played out. They rank up there with tribal, asaian characters, stars, et cetera.

I'm a huge supporter of original artwork, something you're proud to have on your body. Make it worth something to you, the tattoo market is already saturated enough with "because I like the way it looked" tattoos.

    Meh.

I'd say a lot of people have them.... but it's not like they're all tribal

some designs are common - not over done - just classic

I don't think they are played out, especially if it is custom work
I have a custom piece on my calf, but it is the beginning of the Oriental theme I am working on (a leg sleeve or sock, whatever you wanna call it)

but there are so many varieties to a Koi that one can do, so I don't think it's "played out"...even if many people have them

just make sure you want it :)

Get what you want. Who cares if it's "overdone". Just put some thought into it.

Who cares if it's 'overdone' as long as it has meaning to you. Part of the tattoo on my lower back has Kanji in it, it's not off the wall. It's something I researched a lot before deciding on the design. I don't care what people think about it because it's on MY body.

Koi have a lot of meaning and are said to bring luck. Plus they are absolutely beautiful. That's why many people have them. I don't think it's a bad thing.

I am wanting to do a whole back piece was going to go Koi ( lower back ) ->
Dragon breathing fire ( right shoulder ) -> Phoenix being born of flames ( left Shoulder ) And a Tiger \ Bamboo \ water piece ( center )

Im still working on the sketches im thinking the dragon may work best on my lower back im not sure yet.

Anyways now that its not as originol as I thought I may modify.

scratch that 2 people in 1 thread with the same idea I had I know im not doing it anymore mother fark

Kois are overdone. Who cares but, I got one and like it. And if you do you will too, regardless of what others say.

Traditional does not equate to "over-done". People who don't know about the history of tattoos tend to take that attitude about things like koi, old-school roses and skulls, nautical stars, etc without every really putting any research into it.

And in the end, it IS what you want and what it means to you, so fuck everyone else.
