looking for a tripod...i always see people recommending tripods with heads...do all the "good ones" that are recommended have ball heads? what else is that good for other than panning shots? is there a recommended tripod that doesn't use a ball head?

im sure there are tons of them

if you want to get crazy, get a videographer tripod with a fluid filled head

they have pano heads, ball heads, heads w/ quick release grips....pick up a b&h catalog and flip to the tripod section.

Uh pretty sure pan-n-tilt heads are made for panning. Ballheads are best for general photography.

get a 3/8th bolt (me thinks), screw into bottom of camera. tie a string long enough to reach the ground and then tie a washer to the end of said string, then stand on it.

That's a good trick if you don't want to carry around a monopod but it will not replace a tripod.
