I realize it wasn't designed as a sharp shooting rifle, but what makes it so different than any other semi-auto (assuming a civilian copy) rifle?

What would you say is the maximum range of an accurate shot/when does it not even matter anymore?

depends on the country of origin... the dragunov sniper rifles are some of the most accurate guns out there. wasrs... not so much.

the 7.62x39 is an assault cartridge, its not an accurate round to begin with. when you get a gun also designed for rapid fire(auto is above semi on a auto ak) its not meant to be an accurate weapon. plus, it doesnt have the clearances like the ar or other hi precision rifles.

What about the Vector AK's? Made in the US, would that mean anything for accuracy?

AKs are not an MOA weapon, they are an MOM weapon(minute of man)

It's just a "loose" weapon, for lack of a better term. It's made that way to be reliable. You can pop some heads with it, but it's not the go-to gun if you need accurate shot placement.

i saw a show were they compared it to an m16 and at 200 years they couldnt get a single shot on the paper, which was one meter by 2feet if i remeber correctly

thats bullshit. if you said its not a go to gun if you need to hit a target 250 yards away, id agree. its plenty accurate in semi auto form for 100yds.

Various AK's have different build qualities, in 7.62 bulgarian and chicom are pretty decent shooters, preferably milled. A good quality 7.62 AK with decent ammo, although it aint going to shoot sub moa you will be able to hit your targets consistently out to 250-300 yards. It was designed for close <200 yard engagments, it does what it was designed to do. I've shot 5.45 a few times at 300+ and can usally hit my target out to 400 with an optic on it. PSL you can get a few hundred more yards out of but then your talking large caliber versus intermediate.

I understand that one of the main problems with the AK's accuracy is the mass of the bolt/piston assembly slinging around every shot. The AR's bolt is very lightweight by comparison along with tighter overall tolerances.

I never really thought about that, but I guess it's true, it is pretty heavy. Oh and +1 on a titanium buy :x:

I'm not aware of how the AK47 works however for example, the MP5 fires from a closed bolt, roller locker.

Shitty SMGs like the Uzi and all the cheap crap fires from an open bolt.

Therefore MP5 > Uzi for accuracy.

I would imagine this is the case with the AR15 > AK47?

Ok you have to actually clean the AR but you get the idea.

    AK factors that hurt accuracy:
    • Loose tolerances (bolt has lateral and vertical play when in motion)
    • Heavy bolt (1-2 pounds) that seemingly bounces off the back of the receiver every shot
    • Plenty of bolt motion (~6")
    • Crappy sights (post and notch)
    • Typically has a shitty single-stage trigger

How much would a titanium bolt cost? :eek3:

  22. vettefan52

    vettefan52 Guest

more then a new AK probably, due to the fabrication involved, and amount of titanium that would go into the bolt.

my VEPR consistently keeps shots inside the 9 ring from 25 yards with irons. Off the bench ive torn a hole in the bullseye from the same distance. I havent tried it much further than that but hey, thats a good example.

for the record you guys are referring to clearances, not tolerances. Tolerances imply shitty QC while clearances are part of the design itself :o

25yards is a horrible test for a rifle. my wasr can hit only the inner ring at 25yards with irons. i wish i had a 100yd range near me, but i dont. :wtc:
