There's someone I know that's had his '03 WRX for about a year and a half, and he's already on his THIRD transmission. :ugh:

I thought that was a problem with all WRXs.

I will place equal blame on the driver and Subaru.

AWD will inherantly break transmissions more often, especially in the hands of dumbass kids who drop it at a high RPM.

Are WRXs overall pretty good cars? And pretty easily modded cars?

03s have like 60% differnet parts than the 02s. Supposedly they're much better but, as stated, any AWD tranny wil break if mistreated.

Its from a couple of things.

The first, and by far the most important is idiots drivers that drive it way to hard.
You gotta realize that an AWD isnt going to transfer any sort of clutch shudder, or slap through the wheels. Becuase all teh wheels are being driven, so the internals of teh transmission take a harder beating.

    That said...

The most prominent issue however is subaru has a glass seconed gear. No, its not literally glass.
Its a problem with the tooh pitch, and spacing. Basicly the gear is geared in such a way that the mech of the gears can not handle the heavy load put upon them. And they break.
Its a KNOWN problem in Subaru transmission.
So much so infact that for all of the Group-N WRX rally cars, and their STi homologation models, they have a special regeared box, or the beefier six speed with a wider range of gearing to use the power in differnt bands so as not to stress the gears.

Its just a problem with the engineering of their bearbox. THey know about it, and they refuse to fix it. And that personally, rubs me the wrong way.

Now, that also being said. The Evolution transmission is damn near bullet proof. You really have to reif on one of them to get it to blow itself up.
Its not uncommon to see a 450+ BHP EVO with a stock tranny. You wouldent want to push much past 400 with a stock WRX tranny.

    It's much closer to 300 HP than 4. :x

Oh, and the synchros in 1st gear blow balls. Brand new, you can't get into first if the car's even considering rolling and later in the car's life, good luck getting it in at all.

I'm pushing 290 in mine and I wouldn't want to put much more into it. All launches are sub 3K- dropping it at 5K is simply assanine. Why would you want to fuck it up like that?

It's a combination of lack of driving skill and the fact that the car is not very durable. The drivetrain is soft and Subaru should burn for marketing it as a sports car.

I'm convinced that if I had mine and I kept driving it like I was I'd be rebuilding the engine by now. Not because I blew it out, but because I'd have worn it out from too many track days.

So i guess you can say that AWD gives no room for a stress buffer because of the extreme traction....

In a 2wd car you spin the tires... in an AWD car you put stress on the gearbox.

In the WRX if you rev it to 5000 RPM's and dump the clutch you hear a loud *THUMP*. That's the transmission case bottoming out on it's mounts transfering all that stress to the gears, which will eventually cause them to break.

But if I rev my Sentra up to 5000 RPM's and dump the clutch I'm bouncing off of the rev limiter and smoking the tires. Hard on the engine... but the loss of grip was so effortless that there was no extra stress on the gearbox.
