Long story short, I work at a catalog company and we have a large database of old images that we would use for our catalogs. We don't want to delete the images so we can CYA if something is needed later. I have heard of software out there that will allow you to archive on CD-R, but the software will keep record of what files are on each CD so that when you are looking for something you can search in the software and it will tell you which CD to grab. Any of you heard of this or have any suggestions?

DiskTracker was an app under OS 8/9; I don't know if it made it to X but it was great and does exactly what you're looking for
