cmmg, stag, RRA, S&W are all good brands for midrange prices. if you want to splurge, look at colt, LMT, and noveske,

stay away from Olympic, Hesse and Vulcan

cant go wrong with RRA (rock river arms).
CMMG also makes really nice stuff, they have a deal on basic, cosmetically blemished rifles for $550. I have heard good things.

also good is "stag arms" and DPMS. sometimes you will find that the same product is being sold by several different name brands. sometimes a manufacturer will take contracts for parts to be made and branded with someone elses name. the same shop will also sometimes sell the same products with their name on them. this is something you will hear about from time to time, and usually yields good results as you will be buying high-quality stuff at a lower price.

    stay away from:
    bushmaster - overhyped and overpriced
    hesse
    model 1 sales

as stated above, that is not true. the AR platform is based on the M16 platform, which was contracted to many different companies, as well as magazines being contracted to many different companies.
there is probably no greater parts inter-compatibility in firearms than the AR15/M16 platform.

Best rifle, by far, for the money is a Colt. Colts use milspec materials and milspec assembly practices, including milspec quality control. LMT rifles are equivalent, but tend to be priced higher.

Bushmaster, Stag, S&W, and Rock River are all decent rifles. If you look at Rock River do NOT let someone sell you a rifle that doesn't have a chrome-lined barrel.

You definitely don't want to mess with Olympic, Hesse, Vulcan, or Model 1.

gunbroker.com will give you an idea of what is out there and where prices are at.

I like CMMG and Stag myself.

if you are looking to buy over the internet, the most selection is probably at ar15.com, and you will find all the information you will ever need as well.

LMTs can be put together for less/about the same as a Colt 6920.

You may be thinking of the S&W MP15. They've been having issues with their mag wells recently, most notably with the polymer Pmags.

Yes I know this, I own an LMT :) I said "tend to be" because lately I have been seeing 6920s at some real bargain prices.

.308 means AR-10, which is a different kind of beast from the AR-15. Lower, uppers, and most accessories are different. I understand that interchangability is nowhere near as good between different makes of AR-10.
