in addition to the 3 ar's i am looking to start building, would an AR10 fill the gap for a longer range rifle?

    benefits/drawbacks to the .308?

To the round itself, or the rifle shooting it?

There has been a surplus of badass sticks selling over at SH, for really fucking cheap. If you've got some cash to blow, there are guys selling customs for less than half replacement cost.

Whoops..... For some reason I thought it was 7mm/08. So it could be a long action 308?

Actually, it would make a good candidate for a 280AI, but not if you don't reload.

Indeed, it does. It used to be one of the best places on the web for LR shooting. It's gotten somewhat popular over the years, and now has been unfortunately watered down. Still a LOT of big names, industry guys, and knowledgeable people over there; it just requires weeding through more "WHICH RIFLE IS THE BEST EVAR" type posts. I use the watch lists feature extensively, and put watches on guys who know WTF's up.

I'd rather have an M1A for .308 personally.

I hate the idea of hand fitted parts.

A proper M-14 clone needs to use forged parts, and then have these parts hand fitted by a gunsmith... not to mention the fact you have to custom bed the M1A/M-14's action every 3000 rounds for maximum accuracy. Overall, the M-14 platform is a battle rifle platform, and is ill suited for a mass production, accurate rifle.

The AR platform, when properly tuned, is superior to the M-14 platform for accuracy.
