If I want to go from a standard length free float grip to a mid length quad rail system what kind of modifications do I need to make to the gas system/tube? Do I need to replace the gas tube or does it just slide further back in to the upper receiver?

im confused. whats a standard length free float grip? do you already have a quad rail on your rifle? or is it a carbine length gas system and you want to go to a midlength gas system?

if you use a free float mid length handguard on a rifle length barrel, there will be a couple inches of the gas tube showing.
You cannot move the gas block back, you'd have to drill a new hole in the barrel, then you'd have the old hole to deal with (not worth the effort)

sorry for the confusion I took some pics to help explain. I think JRucker knows what I'm trying to say but I'm going to post pics anyway.

    current tube.

what I'm wanting to switch too.

I don't have the gas tube in the rifle at the moment. as you can see from the no front sight. Would you suggest I just buy the same length quad rail system as my current tube? I'm probably going to run flip up sights so I will have to get a gas block too. Thanks again.

It's gonna look pretty funny with a rail that's too short.
I suggest getting either the correct length rail, or a different barrel to go with the rail you've got.

Of course if you get a new barrel, You'd better just get it with a upper.
And when you do that, you'll need to get a new lower to go with the extra upper and barrel you'll have...
See where this is going? :hsugh:

That's exactly how I ended up with the 3.5 AR's I have now. in fact, the first part I bought was a free float handguard.
It's too late, you'd better just buy a whole new rifle for that handguard.

 ARs are the only rifles where someone can say with a straight face "you should just build a new rifle for that handguard"
