If you want something without the forward assist, the DPMS low pro is pretty good. It damn rigid and has more metal on the side opposite the ejection port. Most upper receivers are pretty thin right there

I've seen a blown AR and it actually blew out the side where the forward assist was. :dunno:

Is that a bad thing? If I had a kb, I think I'd like the majority of the venting to be on the side my face isn't :big grin:

There is not much use for a forward assist if you keep the rifle reasonably clean. If you were someplace real dirty or sandy like Iraq it might not be a bad thing to have, but chances are if you need it, your pretty much going to have a lot of FTF's anyway.

As far as blowing up a AR it's hard to say. I rather it wented out the forward assist then the charging handle. You would have to do something real bad to get a AR to blow up. Most likely bad ammo in a form of a kB, casehead failure, or multiple squibs. In other words use good ammo.
