im looking into buying my first ar. The main one im considering the bushmaster a3 m4. any thoughts or ideas. I don't want to build one just yet , until l am more familiar with them. So that route is out the question. I am not set on the bushmaster. Just looking for ideas. Mainly going to be used at the range. Which is a max of 150 yards.

It's a good rifle, especially considering the price.

Probably the best way to become familiar with them is to build one, it really isnt that hard. But if you want to buy first you have plenty of options with S&W, Bushmaster, RRA, and the others. Are you looking for specifically a range gun, or is there more you would like to do with it?

my first rifle was a BM A3. Fantastic rifle IMO. No problems. Got a fluted heavy barrel. Kinda wish it was a little bit lighter now. :o

but if you're on a budget, get a complete stag upper, and a lower of your choice.

If you wanted to go a little cheaper you could get a regular FSB and chop it off with a dremel since its going to be under the rail anyway. An assembled CMT upper is only $100 too so maybe $850-900 for a DIY with some creative frugality. quality rails are spensive :(

For just a little more than the CMMG bargain bin ones you can have your own brand new rifle that you built yourself. This is the route I am probably going to go, but if you don't feel comfortable putting on together the CMMG's are definitely going to be your cheapest option.

yeah with a CMT upper and barrel w/bolt it's ~930.

basically same as Rainier is already selling sans flash hider, MPI bolt, and forged charging handle.

First lesson when building your first AR....

You DO NOT have to buy the most expensive shit made to build it. You don't need the same rail that Navy SEALS use, you don't need the same ACOG rangers use. When it's your first, stick with basics so you learn as you go.

Consider what you are going to use it for and then realize that you can get the same or better results without trying to make your gun an exact replica of a combat weapon. (plus you won't look like a poser at the range). You sit down, write out what you want it for, be it just plinking cans, range work, long range target shooting, hunting (and for what) then build to what you want it to be.
