Ok, so some of you may remember my post from about a month or a month and a half ago about me starting my AR build. I'm using an Armalite lower, with a CAR stock.

It is going to be a lightweight build, and I had initially intended on using an A1 upper, and figured that if I wanted optics later I could use one of the many carry handle mounts or a gooseneck. But after handling a rifle with a carry-handle mount at the gun show, I realized how atrocious the cheekweld is.

So my question is this: if I used a gooseneck, wouldn't the rear sight obscure most of the optic in the first place? If so, this seems pretty useless. Would I just be better off going with a flattop with a flip-up rear BUIS?

It's the way I went without any regrets.

if you're doing a lightweight build i would get a flat top upper with a troy BUIS and a pencil barrel. you can have all this from CMMG

The thing is though, I'm a college student, so money is tight, the odds of me affording an optic in the next 3 years is L-O-W.

Thats pretty much what I did. Works fine and I'm planning to add an optic before long.

So then buy a flat top and a bolt on carry handle/sight combo. Then when its out of your system and you can afford an optic you won't have to get a new upper.

what is this thing you refer to a gooseneck? :hsugh:

i have NEVER heard that term before, anywhere. :mamoru:

i can only assume you are talking about a larue style acog/aimpoint mount. am i right?

anyhow, i'd just go with the flat top and a buis. arms #40 is quite popular.

I don't think I've ever heard of someone who bought a flat-top wishing they'd gotten an A1/carry handle, but I hear the reverse all the time.

Buy what you want the first time, even if that means saving up longer.

get the flattop and if you really like the look, get a detachable A1 or A2 style carry handle. when you get the money for optics, you can sell it off :dunno:
