I'm thinking about buying one. What are some good brands? DPMS? Rock River? Olympic?

+1 for Rock River. They make the best budget ARs.

Avoid Hesse and Vulcan mostly. Generally most lowers are the same, except if they are forged or billet. It basically depends on which logo you want. And since you are in California, get whatever you can get.

Also another +1 to building. It is cheaper plus you get to know your gun better.

    RRA LPK $62 shipped
    RRA Upper $430 shipped
    Lower less than $200
    Buttstock about $50

These are all brand new parts and you can still get them cheaper.

I hear there are great variations in each batch by the same manufacture. Get whatever is cheapest or whatever logo you want. www.ddranch.com has RRA for 120 + ship + dros, unfortunately they are out of stock so you will have to wait or look elsewhere. I have a doublestar and pretty happy with it, however I plan on getting another lower with an AK receiver.

quality seems to be hit or miss these days in terms of finish. Mine were 115 ea, so im not really bitching. (course, the dealer fees fucked me over)

Both mine and my buddies DSC lower turned out great. You should not have any problems. However on Calguns, someones lower actually turned out bad :hsd:
