My wife bought this for me for my 28th B-Day. Colt Match Target. She got it for $715 and I think it's the closest I've ever been to actually crying over a present. I would like to trick it out, but I don't know if I should keep it pristine and start on another one. Any opinions?

Keep it as is, buy another upper to screw with, later on, buy a 2nd lower and
build it to however you want. You've now just slowly accumulated a 2nd rifle
that is exactly how you want without messing with her gift, in the meantime
you can slap either upper on the lower that came with the original present.

My girl like shooting my guns, but when she asks what I want for christmas or my birthday she balks at the gun related items, because she doesn't want to have to tell people she bought me gun related things.

Sound like he found a good one there.

She was LEO and actually got it for me during the AWB years = ). If I start on another one I will probably go with a .308 model instead. Always thought the .223 was just too damn wimpy.

Oh, it will kill, but if I build one it will be for hunting. I like at least a .270 round even for whitetail. I've never had to follow a blood trail or worry about one that jumped a fence. Seen it too many times with just plain bad shots and smaller rounds (honestly it's usually a bad shot). Seen perfect heart/lung shots with .223 and even with a .243 that just didn't have the kinetic behind it to knock the damn deer down and away they go. Keep running until they realize they've been dead for while.

Well, if it's for hunting deer then I completely agree with the decision to go with 308.
