I found a full AR-15 kit for $460 online. Is that too good to be true or is there something I am missing? I found it on Model 1 Sales online site. Thanks.

that means you have to add on about around 100 bucks for the receiver

"The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten."

I would pay a little more and get a Stag 2H with ARMS #40 BUIS (479 from arfcom ee) then a stock $50 and LPK $55, and you won't have to worry for a long time about stuff breaking.

Thanks guys. But overall... I am looking at around $600 total for a full AR-15? I thought most AR-15s are going for $800 and up.

    What I got.

Bought both my lower and upper from JKiser on Arfcom
Im pretty happy with it considering it cost me around $800 after all said and done. Got a 2H upper, complete lower with a tactical stock.

    2H upper - $485 from JKiser
    Complete lower - $225 JKiser
JKiser replaced the CAR stock with a tactical one for $15
    Hogue grip $20

    Then
Few CProducts mags at $10 each NIB at the gunshow
Wolf brand carry case for about $30 from SG

Currently using an ammo can of Radway Green I picked up at the FUNshow

May get an EOtech 412 AA model later on.

I am planning on making my own someday. Ive seen early issue M16 parts kits at Sarco for around $450 to $475.
Ive been told to stay away from Sarco by multiple people but I figure its worth a shot anyway.
Then just buy a receiver parts kit, and some random stripped receiver be it Stag, RRA, etc.

i got one of those kits from m-aparts.com, they use LMT parts and LMT is a contractor for the government, so they can't be that bad. My kit was 450 and then I got a rock river stripped lower for 135. So my total was 585. I love my kit. Everything went together perfectly.

I understand, but are the AR-15s for $500 that much more problematic than the ones you buy for $800+ ? Lots of malfunctions due to cheaper parts?

Cheaper receivers ahve out of spec holes, poor fit/finish etc. A cheap upper will generally give you accuracy problems, FTE if the bolt is out of spec.

I looked at your $460 kit and it had less expensive options compared to my AR I got from JKiser
Mine is more comparable to the $495 model. Afer I upgraded everything to make it comparable to what I got from JKiser for my $725 (which already included shipping btw), the kit would cost you $585 not including shipping. Then the receiver would cost you another $100. So in the end you would have soent over $700 for a kit AR while I spent $725 for a factory built upper and lower.

What kind of parts would be better for me to upgrade to get better performance?

i got my kit from j&t and its nice and they were a pleasure to deal with and seemed to be a quality rifle. you could also look on ar15.com and buy a used upper with b/c/ch, a lower parts kit, stock and then buy a strippd lower reciever. I built a rifle like that for a little over 400 total and it was my favorite rifle. i suggest you go to ar15.com and do some research before you buy anything.

    Chrome lined barrel for one

Also, with a flip up sight it is easier to add a holographic sight later because the rear sight can be flipped down
