I know I saw someone mention a site that has alot of good programs/utilities that will run off of a flash drive rather than being installed.

Anyone happen to have a link?

When you run Ubuntu from a flash drive is it just like running it from a disc or can you save files?

You install it from a disc onto the FLASH drive and you boot up like it's a hard drive. Some IT guys like to use it for accessing machines that are otherwise unbootable.

That's awesome. My roommate has like 4 2gb flash drives... maybe I can convince him to give me one so I can try it out.

If you know how you can run anything from a flash drive as long as you maintain its installed directory structure, might have to make a script that sets the registry up properly and then executes the program though (in case its not installed on whatever machine you're on). Also, it won't be fast.

Depends on how good the FLASH memory is. You remember that CompactFlash card I'm using as a pagefile in my home machine? I ran HDTach on it and its average transfer speed was 45MB/s. That's plenty fast to start most programs.

Hmm, yeah I guess. I know it takes roughly 300ms for us to write an 8kb data file to our internal flash memory on our product at work, and that batch transferring 1000 of these files takes about 5 minutes, guess we are using some low performance shit lol, thanks Atmel.

That's the best reason I've heard yet to use modular hardware. Even our firewall has a CF slot that it boots its OS from.

Yes, I opened a $16000 firewall and voided its warranty. A heatsink fell off and I had to reattach it.

they are kinda crap unless your some one who doesn't know how to do all that <- most people

they allow the drive to run programs right off of it with out letting most programs like library things know. only nice thing about is there easy to yous don't have to spend any time on them all point and click but on the other hand not as good if you do spend the time on it

but for most peoples needs it gets the job done
