I'm system admin of a lab that has 12 computers, 11 of which have the same 10 or so programs installed

these programs are specialized GIS programs and are updated rather frequently. Instead of having to install patches and service packs and new updates on each computer seperately, I'm thinking of just hosting all of the software on the main file and backup server.

Then, I'll only have to update one computer, and everybody can use the same application. What do you guys think of this? Do I need any specialized software, or can I just install the software on the server and create shortcuts to it on each individual machine?

iv used norton ghost in the past for mass deployment. u can set up a ghost manager on the server, then clients on the host machines and send over the invrements

but I'd still have to install the software on each individual machine

I'm thinking an application server would better suit the labs' needs. Is there anything tricky involved? Or is it just install on server and set up shortcuts to individual computer?
