I'm gonna call it. Apple TV blows.

You can't play DivX movies. So you can't rip your own DVDs and play them, if you want to compress them. And its not a DVR.

I understand the politics of DRM... but Apple TV blows, as a result of them.

I see what Apple is trying to do with it, but the XBox360 does that... and so much more. 360 really beat Apple to the living room this time around.

I want one, but I question how much I'd use it when my iPod connects to my 360.

Personally I think its pretty funky, and may be a hit with a lot of people.

My theatre is controlled by XBMC atm, so I will not be switching.

I'm gonna wait and see what the fuck people use something like this for, because I rarely watch my tv except for obscure netflix dvds.

I don't think it's meant to be revolutionary or superfantabulous... just like the iPod Hi-Fi...

Without the DRM shit, they could have had one box that does everything. But then the studios won't let them sell movies. So they sell a box that doesn't do much of anything, owing to the format limitations and lack of DVR integration.

They should have called it Newton 2.0.

I wouldnt take it that far.. as they said that have sold 1.5M movies on itunes and some crazy amount of tv eps... its a perfectly logical step for heavy itunes store users.

besides that, like anything else they'll have this playing other formats or have other workarounds for the restrictions in no time.

can't stream videos to the 360 though from a mac. and even for music and pictures, you need third party software, Connect360.

absolutely agree. it must be hacked. otherwise, i see no benefit over my current method of hooking up the powerbook via dvi cable.

:werd: When I've got a DVI cable and an optical input hanging out of my rack, I can slot my MBP in right under the 67" HDTV, start up FrontRow, and sit back with the apple remote. Takes me about 10 seconds to set up. And I've got a 360 for everything else.

if the device uses regular notebook hard drives+ notebook memory, then it won't be long till people start upgrading them to 200GB drives and larger memory chips. if it uses the ipod drive then its gonna be a little more difficult

I'm not buying one. I don't have any of my movies imported into iTunes. Most of them are on my NAS drive (which I doubt appletv can access) and some are divx.

I'm afraid a headless Windows Media Center box would be better than appletv. :(

People get this so fucking mixed up...

The xbox360 requires you to have the video in fucking wmv.

There seem to be no wmv converters for Macintosh. I've got my 360 all networked but can't watch any movies or anything because its not supported. DiVX won't play, .mov, .avi, .mpeg, .mp4, etc.

Anyone have a MACINTOSH converter that goes from the above formats to fucking WMV

I tried Handbrake, and it converted 5.1 sound to stereo, even though I selected 5.1. Is it supposed to do 5.1?

Which blows, because the lan ports are only 10/100, not gigabit.
