I went in the other day because my power supply died, and while i was there i asked about the crack in my macbooks case. Its a thin crack that goes from just under the indentation for the magnetic latch to about three or four inches to the left.

Apple "genius" told me it wouldnt be covered, unless the keyboard surface itself were cracked. Its such bullshit, my macbook is always in a padded case, but i carry it around everyday for school and i use it a ton. I just dont think the plastic is strong enough for heavy usage.

IBM figured that one out years ago, which is why all Thinkpads have magnesium endoskeletons. I guess it's taking Apple a bit longer to learn that lesson since they haven't been used in the corporate world for, what, 25 years now?

it's a very common problem. it's caused by pressure on the palm rest from the top lid. some geniuses say it's the customers own fault, they shouldnt put pressure on the laptop. other geniuses say it happens all the time and it's a common problem, so they'll replace it for free. it all depends on the genius/apple store

Gonna check up on this, see if I can get mine replaced. Problem is the nearest Apple store is like 2 hours away at least. Damn this state (NC) blows. Back home in CA, it was like 20 mins away.

I know that's not the state's fault, but this state just sucks in general. ;)

A buddy of mine just got the casing replaced on his macbook because of cracks he had in the shell. He has Applecare as well. You need to bitch up a storm.

your computer is covered under initial warranty for one year.

Applecare extends your warranty to 3 years from the initial date of purchase.

I think he's saying that Apple extended the warranty on just the plastic case alone on MacBooks to 3 yrs. So even if you don't have AppleCare, they should replace the case on your MacBook. I'm gonna make the drive this weekend to my nearest Apple Store and see if I can get it replaced on mine.
