Just what a lot of you have been waiting for. Almost. It's Still a G4.

Apple on Monday released a new PowerBook line featuring a scrolling TrackPad and Sudden Motion Sensor running up to 1.67 GHz, starting at $1499.

The new PowerBooks come standard with 512MB memory, integrated AirPort® 802.11g, Up to 100 GB Hard drive, Bluetooth 2.0 wireless networking and the scrolling TrackPad and the Sudden Motion Sensor. Apple's new scrolling TrackPad "works with every application and document, so users can easily scroll through long web pages or across large photographs. Simply touch the trackpad with two fingers instead of one to quickly scroll or pan within the window." Also included with the new PowerBooks is Sudden Motion Sensor technology that integrates a tri-axis accelerometer that helps protect a spinning hard drive if the notebook is accidentally dropped. Apple's backlit keyboard is now built in to all 15- and 17-inch PowerBooks and is up to 10 times brighter than in previous models.

“Apple continues to lead the industry with the most innovative notebooks,” Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing Philip Schiller said. “With new features like the scrolling TrackPad and Sudden Motion Sensor, the new PowerBooks are the ultimate combination of performance and portability.”

Starting at $1499, the new PowerBook models will be available later this week at the Apple Store online, Apple’s retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers.

nice that they finally uped the minimum RAM and gave the HD a speed increase as well not to mention the 8X DVD+/- Superdrive. But beyond that it's pretty weak. They haven't updated the Powerbook line since April '04 for THIS? I hope Apple can blow everyone away w/ a new design (G5 please) and do it soon.

In all fairness though I guess the update isn't all that bad since they added some new features.

Good. If they came up with G5 PowerBook I would've be even more mad and I would've shot my monitor...

I just bought my PowerBook two weeks ago and they came up with new update.... :wtc: :wtc: :wtc: I don't think computer store at my school will even accept return at this point...

How much speed difference between 1.33 and 1.5 be?

not much at all. The only thing i would have wanted would have been the more vram and bigger HD.
    Big deal.

plus the new trackpad and the SMS :coold: so if you drop your shit the HD locks up and helps prevent data loss :)

I know alot of you are waiting for the G5. I'm interested to see what they will do with that too, but here is my question.

I'm kind of new to Apple's..and what type of notebook was that silly orange one called? I really like the design of the powerbooks that are out now, and am wondering.. When apple comes out with a new processor, does it change the design of the notebook as well? Or is that more done randomly to say... I just love the way the powerbook and ibook look right now!

The days of the clamshells are over. Where ever Apple goes, it won't be back. I expect the next ibook to look like the current one, mostly.

I think they will eventually move the iBooks to look aluminum and white, much like the iPod mini and Mac mini.

look a little deeper at the pricing there are not many if any add ons to a 17" except for RAM and applecare. lots of standard stuff across the powerbook line that used to be add on. the same system used to be over $3200. now is a great time to get a powerbook.

I WISH the 12" got a damned backlit keyboard...15.2 is huge to lug around campus or wherever for my needs...

I use the 12" ibook now, and it's a g3 with a combo drive...it's time for an upgrade...
