app times out due to very large number of rows in db

    running windows and sql server 2000
    we have a table with nearly 3million rows
    one suggestion was to split the tables by date

    do you guys have other suggestions?

    Most likely, you just need to add the proper indexes to the table.

    Open Query Analyzer, click Tools --> Show Execution Plan, then enter the query that is timing out. After it finishes running, click the "Execution Plan" tab and see where the bulk of the running time is taking place. Optimize your indexes based upon the hot spots. Re-run the query and further tune if necessary.

    why are you pulling so many rows? only pull what you need.

    You probably need to write a better query in addition to generating indexes.
