I think I know how this is going to go, but just thought I'd check.

    Also, post why.

If you use something else like Bridge, then say which one you're using. Sorry, I can't figure out how to edit the poll.

Aperture is a Lotus Elise and Lightroom is a Bugatti Veyron.

I started with LR so I'm more comfortable with that. I used Aperture in school and it just feels like a water downed version of LR.

So out of 10 people that have voted for LR, no one has said why one is better than the other. 1992 240sx said Aperture is a watered down version of LR, but in what way?

honestly though, I think I use LR because I know Adobe is *the* company to turn to for programs like that. Photoshop is the standard of the industry -- MANY industries -- and LR is just another extension of that. If PS is so good, why would anyone doubt LR wouldn't be? That's my reason for going w/ it vs. aperture.

Its like asking the question WHY are you using PS instead of paint? :squint: give me a reason!

When I've talked to people that use Aperture, they tell me that LightRoom is layed out completely different that any other Adobe product, and the layout is poorly done. I believe this was pre-2.0, but it's just what I heard. When I started photography, I used LightRoom. When I couldn't import RAW images from my 300D to LightRoom, I tried out Aperture and it worked perfect. Granted I've got a card reader now and I could use both, Aperture seems to have a great layout and it's extremely intuitive. Plus, from within Aperture, I can edit a picture externally using Photoshop. I can directly upload my images to my MobileMe gallery. It's much cheaper as well (for the people that actually pay for software). Those are just my reasons for using Aperture. If someone can give me more of a reason to consider switching to LightRoom, then I'll try it again. Can LightRoom directly upload to servers/Flickr/anything? I''m not asking that to try and make a point, I'm asking because I actually am curious because I don't know.

One thing that peeves me about LR is that, whenever I export an image out of it it looks like it has a painted look. They introduced this look with LR 1.1 and toned it down some by LR 1.2 but they still have it. I believe it's the default sharpening setting they have in LR, even with everything at ZERO value.

edit: same images exported by photoshop will not have the painterly look, so it's not an ACR issue.

I expect more replies similiar to yours in near future, as not many people seem to notice this problem.

    edit: http://www.adobeforums.com/webx?14@@.3bc44a00/186

Above link discusses this problem when it was at its worst back in LR 1.1. Adobe did make improvements and depending on lighting conditions and type of photography you do, you don't really notice this problem. But when you do notice it, it's annoying as fuck to open the DNG in photoshop and export from PS just cause LR can't export images properly. And it blows my mind that 2 products from same company that uses same RAW engine can't export same quality jpegs.

Having used both, I thought Aperture was a lot easier to use at first. I liked how you can manage your photos on your own, create web galleries, and such. I had only used LR 1.1 before and comparing the two, I thought Aperture did a better job at managing and editing photos. I needed dual monitor support and at the time Aperture was the only one to do so in the manner I needed. Now that AP2 and LR2 are out, and installing both, I now prefer LR.

I won't discount Aperture in the least as it is very versatile but the two things I needed just weren't found on Aperture anymore: Auto Import and automatic displaying of most recent photo taken. And since im a lazy mofo, I like the web galleries you can create from LR better than Aperture.

This is the exact kind of feedback I was looking for :bigthumb: For me, auto import and last imported picture aren't really features that I find necessary or worth the extra $100. But that's just my opinion.

Think of M$ and Apple as wal-mart. They make everything, they want you to use their products for EVERY-THING!!! Adobe concentrates on what they do. They don't waiver, they don't falter. They make their product, and they make it good. They don't care what OS you have, what computer you have... as long as its fast enough for you to run their products.
