    well i recently upgraded to server 2003 and stupid me did not back up my httpd.conf file well i had that config file set up to have referals on
    well now i cant figure out wtf to do

    am i right in thinking that i have to add this line?

    CustomLog logs/access_log "%h %l %u %t \"%r\" %s %b \"%{Referer}i\" \"%{User-Agent}i\""

    and if so where?

    Yeah, you have to add that line to httpd.conf

    Here is snippet mine, the last part of the log definition names it, then you have to choose which one you want.

    LogFormat "%{Referer}i -> %U" referer
    LogFormat "%{User-agent}i" agent




    CustomLog /var/log/apache/access.log combined
