so i'm not a complete computer noob, i build computers and i've done slight programming with C++, HTML, and Java, and i'm looking to set up my own FTP for myself and others to have access to.

pretty much i've installed apache and opened up the proper ports on my router, but the code inside the httpd.conf file for apache has so many different lines, i'm not sure which ones to edit to grant access to my files. any help would be greatly appreciated.

apache doesn't do FTP. apache is HTTP.

If you want FTP, then download "filezilla" (the ftp server version, obviously... not the client).

well, if you want a webserver, then IIS is better than apache, when run on windows.

But you definitely don't sound competant to run a public server, and your cable/dsl modem probably has unimpressive upstream speeds... So why not dish out like $10 a month and get a dreamhost account?

First of all, you installed apache off of a torrent?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!

You should *NOT* NOT NOT NOT NOT be setting up a webserver. Please back away from the computer.

IIS is a built-in Windows service. Do some more research before trying to set up your own server, please.

To the original thread starter. Do not run a webserver from home without knowing what you are doing first. Your computer will be exploited so quickly you wouldn't know what happened or how to fix it other than the typical noob way of "Reinstalling Windows".

Sign up for a hosting account with a web hosting company and leave it to them to maintain your service. You will just simply have to upload what you wish to share with others to the server and provide a link to the files.
