So, I want to learn how to use newsgroups instead of torrents, and am not really sure how to use them efficiently. I want to demo it, and so, i found out that my isp has a free server at news.optonline.net so, I downloaded Unison and edited the usenet server, and tried to go to alt.binaries.dvd but it shows like 20 files, and they are some random things i've never heard of. Any help so I can say search for a video or file etc and just download it?

I use a program called MT NewsWatcher for newsgroups. But I just use it for porn.

    go to newzbin.com
buy 4 weeks worth of access ($2). search there and download the nzb files for whatever video/music/audio/porn you want...

then download macpar deluxe and use that to extract using the par files that you downloaded with the other files.

    pretty much...

it's easy to start off with the nzb files, then once you get the hang of it and how the alt.binaries work you can just browse the directories yourself. honestly, it's easiler than torrents once you learn.

    you basically need
    1) unison
    2) mac par deluxe
    3) news group account (newshosting.com = $15/month, unlimited downloads)

then just learn to use nzb's at first (kinda like a torrent, points to the files, downloads what you need), then learn to use the alt.binaries.

    that's honestly pretty much it...

    short tutorial:

    you'll need
    1) unison
    2) mac par deluxe
    3) newsgroup account (newshosting.com is what i use, $15/month, unlimted access/download)
    4) nzb file (newzbin.com, yabse.com, nzbmatriz.com)

    - get a newsgroup account, and get the login info (login, pass, hosting address)
    - put all that stuff into unison
    - in unison, go to the preferences and set where you want your downloads to go, and put the simultanious downloads to 6
    - associate the nzb file with unison and double click
    - unison should start to download the files to where ever you set them to go
    - once downloads are complete, go to your downloads folder and look for the .par file.
    - open up said par file with mac par deluxe. (don't forget to assciate it, do a get info)
    - what will happen now, is that it'll check all your files to see if you're missing anything, anything corrupt, blah blah blah, and using the par files that were downloaded it, it will fix problems if there are any. if not, it'll start to extract the files.
    - done.

once you get comfortable on how the nzb's work, you can start to try and understand the alt.binaries and how to get the files.

I'm still a little confused on how to get the nzb file. Someone sent me a link to one, and I was able to use camino and par to get the file, but how do I normally get the nzb file?

    Raider, thanks for the tutorial.

I am trying to put my info into unison, and I feel like an idiot for asking, but what is the Sever adress? I tried newzbin.com v3.newzbin.com and a couple alt.binaries.xxxxxx adresses that I found on some pages. I search through some help docs but couldn't find anything.

So where/what is the server adress that I can enter into unison?

whatever newsgroup company you went with...
for example, in my case, i use newshosting.com for my newsgroup access (unlimited usage, $15/month). so for my server info it's unlimited.newshosting.com, then i put in the login/pass that they provided me.

the server address has nothing to do with the alt.binaries, or newzbin. Think of it this way. Newshosting.com (or Giganews, or whatever you decide to go with) is the ISP. the alt.binaries are the websites. and the newzbin.com's are the googles to find what you want.

So by buying the 4 week access at newzbin for $2 did I buy access to the wrong place? I I feel like I am missing something totally obvious.

yes, you're missing something totally obvious...

    1) you need to pay $15/month to have a newsgroup account (see the newshosting.com thing i've said at least 4 times now ;) ) or you can try and see if your isp has a free one. chances are if they do, it's like a 2-5 gig limit per month and super slow.

    2) that newzbin.com $2 thing you bought is optional, it just makes things easier to find as you begin to use newsgroups.

    to break it down...
    newsgroup access = isp
    alt.binaries = websites
    newzbin.com = google

basically, for $2, you bought the right to use that specific search engine. the problem is, everyhing you find on that search engine, is on newsgroup servers...which you don't have access too, unless you pay for newsgroups or see if your isp has a free one.

the single most important thing you need out of everything on this list, is the newsgroup server access.

the only thing you need to pay for is the $15/month.
newzbin.com is completely optional, i've listed other free ones (yabse.com, nzbmatrix.com....) it's just newzbin.com is really good.

if you want a free porn one. go to newzxxx.com and use your newzbin.com account info. it's like their sister site, just free, and only for porn.

once you understand how the alt.binaries work out, you can go and find the files yourself without needing to use a search engine. that'll come in time though.
