It's about time for me to do some long term saving for retirement. Any opinions on the TSP vs. a IRA or Roth IRA? :x:

I'm about to start my TSP, but I've only heard good things so far. Do your research.

TSP is about the cheapest investment you can make. Right now is a good time to get in because the market is low; shares are cheaper.

You used to be able to play it like the stock market before they put the 3 interfund trades per month cap on it. Good to have your $$ in the G fund until you feel we're at rock bottom since every other fund keeps dropping and once we're at bottom buy it up cheap.

It is no better investment wise than any other IRA, the only good thing about it is the "ease of use" and it has no minimum initial investment.

I've had like 5-8% going in to it since I joined, mostly in the I-fund, recently moved to the G-fund since I'm getting out and every thing else keeps dropping because of the economy.

Average quarter is something around 4% return. Better than a savings account, and I probably would of spent the money if it wasn't going in to the TSP so I don't feel it was a loss. Soon as I get out though it'll all be transferred over to a real Roth IRA.
