Was talking to my Dad last night and he mentioned he was squatting on the ProSpot machine - and then he got excited because he had heard of a gym-related thing that I had no idea existed.

    http://www.prospotfitness.com/pages/p600.html

It basically has smith machine like support without tracking the bar - electrically detects when your hands are on the bar to let you unrack, you can set the depth catch point (like pins on a rack) via a pendulum thingy on the back, and it's supported weightlessly by those cords around it so it sort of self spots. Thing is crazy :eek3:

On a side note my dad was chubby 4 years ago, and is now 56, does century bike races (100miles) on the regular and oly squats [email protected] dude is in better health than i

    Your dad is awesome.

If it electronically detects your hands, does that mean you can't wear gloves?

I don't see how it's better than a regular power rack

it's not - but i think the point is that for the average commercial gym goer it gives them the illusion of feeling safer or something

Right, but this isn't a smith machine, it's a fancy self spotted power rack basically

my mistake. when i looked at the site it looked like the range of motion is pre determined by the machine as a smith machine is as opposed to a free range of natural motion such as a power rack.

Only thing i do on the smith machine sometimes is inverted rows and shrugs. It's funny when I'm on it and Smith Machine Guy is waiting for it, i'll intentionally take forever and I can see him getting agitated.

i knew exactly what you were talking about without clicking the link

the Boston Sports Club in Waltham, MA has one and it was pretty badass. Basically get set with the bar, grip the sensor strip on the bar and it disengages (bar becomes free-floating), as soon as you take your hands off the strip the bar locks in place.

Dont know how well it works under powerlifting conditions but for the weekend warrior its pretty badass

You wouldn't. I have no idea why you would wear gloves while squatting. I was just curious.
