So, I've got an idea for a shot, probally been done to death, but I want to learn how to use it.

I'm trying to reproduce a shot like this.

So I tried setting up my flash on strob mode around 1/64th, 30-40Hz, using my cam on tripod table height, small app, ISO 100, around 2 second exposure. I threw the ball, hit my shutter, then tripped the flash that I held in my hand.

Best picture I got was this.

Granted this was about a 10 min experiment. So what am I missing out on? I need more flash power, lower the tripod to not see so much of the table, and get more separation from the background right?

Any tips? Oh yeah, I'm using a 40D, Tamron 28-75, and a 580EX II if that makes any difference.

Is this something I'll be able to accomplish with my 580EX II? Can I substitute higher ISO's to make up for the lack of power? Then again, how would I overcome the ambient light issue?

It's the reflection from the white wall that was only like 4 feet behind the table. I need a black curtain or something to hang on it, and move the table further back from the wall.
