I have been looking at dreamhost (dreamhost.com) and it looks good but I was wondering if anyone uses it and is it a good host?

for non-serious websites, sure. for websites where it gets a lot hits, no.

I have no clue why people choose dreamhost. There are so many other better hosts out there.

I used dreamhost for close to a year. The first six months weren't bad (this was before they got bigger) - but then I noticed horrrrrrrible speed issues, and my FTP wouldn't let me in most of the time. I went three months with no responses on support other than saying it was my ISP. I had one support ticket saying that I was an asshole (and thats a quote) in response to me saying it was absurd that I cannot access my FTP.

Choosing a host that oversells like that is just begging for trouble.

Dreamhost is only good for hosting in AH, nothing else. If you have a website you need up DO NOT USE DREAMHOST. This week alone they've had 3 separate system wide network failures and have NEVER gone a month without having everyone down for some period of time.

I think it's funny how all of the non-english speakers hangout in the webmaster forum... Fuckers are trying to take over the internet with fail.

Dreamhost themselves will tell you how bad they are.

    http://status.dreamhost.com/

If you read the comments you will see that even their own customers hate Dreamhost

I think I had the 777 deal or w/e (might have been 9999) and it cost me 9$ a year.

I just recently had my account "hacked" through dream host. Try to contact them... they don't have a phone number. You have to do everything through email. I also didn't feel my information was very secure.

I've got two accounts (one personal and one business). Each one is on a separate server. Neither server I am on has that many issues. These major outages that their status site reports, I've not really seen them down. I guess I don't use my site a ton or need it up 24x7.

Some of their outage issues have been DDOS related, and there isn't a whole lot that can be done about that. Null routes after the DDOS starts, etc. Any host is susceptible to them.
