Home for 14 days leave after A-school for Navy and my permanent duty station is Port Hueneme, California. Anyone currently stationed there or ever been? How is the base? Barracks? Quality of living? Entertainment? so on....

I live in Oxnard which is next to Pt Hueneme. Port Hueneme is actually really small and the base borders both towns. Point Mugu is a couple miles away too. Not much to do in Oxnard/Pt Hueneme, but Ventura has the night life going on. I know a lot of the club/bar promoters out here, and there's always something going on at night.

Camarillo is 10 mins away and has a big outlet shopping center. Lots of name brand stores. Oxnard has a few shopping centers as well. Ventura has the mall, Thousand Oaks has a huge mall that just got remodeled.

LA is about 45 minutes away. Santa Barbara is about 30 mins north. Malibu is 20 mins south.

There's the Ventura County Fair in the summer. Santa Barbara has "Fiestas" which is like a mini Mardi Gras.

The area is mostly an agricultural area, so you'll find lots of fresh fruits and vegetables year round. Due to that, Oxnard itself is a Latino majority community. You'd think you were in Mexico at times, depending on where you find yourself.

I am arriving there on the 28th. I have called down there and the assistance was less ideal so I am not to sure of what to do when I arrive.

I was stationed in Hawaii and loved it (Pearl Harbor), but it does kind of get old not being able to go see the family without some serious planning:o. There's plenty to do on the islands themselves though.
