Just curious to see how much they are going for used. Trying to decide if I want to get a used D40 or just jump into buying a new D90.

I've shot both, but never really got into playing with the settings. Just had my friends adjust settings not found on P&S cameras.

    Why not a refurb D90?

Adorama selling a demo condition D80 for $550 too.

It's goofy to buy anything CCD from Nikon now, just get a D90, or at worst, a D5000

It doesn't matter unless you already have lenses, or absolutely have to have a lens type that doesn't come in an AF-S version (which there's one less of every time Nikon puts a new lens on the market). AF-S lenses you buy for the D40 will work just fine with the next SLR body you upgrade to. No shame there.

Adorama is selling refurb D40 kits for $375 shipped. That's less than a prosumer P&S. It's what I plan to go for such time as I have the cash handy. It depends on your budget. Me, I can't go drop three times as much on a D90 or T1i kit so the D40 seems a perfectly acceptable route to me. D40 versus Powershot SX10 IS? Yeah, easy choice. D40 versus G10 for 100-some bucks more? LAFF.

Some third party lenses like Sigma's HSM series won't work on a D40 either, even though they have their own motor.

well, not sure if you've tried one, but i have used a Sigma HSM 50-150 perfectly fine on a D40. pretty decent lens if i might add.

I have a D40x I want to sell, but I haven't figured out a reasonable price :hs: If you're interested, let me know and we'll see if we can work something out.

I think it was the 70-200 hsm I saw that said that.

How do you like the 50-150? Any front focusing?

    Used d80 should be considered.
