    This is from Half-Life 2: Episode 1...

My regular HL2 runs perfect and so do all other games. Any idea what's causing this?

I have a Radeon 9800XT, was using the 5.10 Catalyst drivers and tried updating to 6.5 but it didn't change anything.

Looks like your monitor is low on ink.

artifacting is usually caused by video card memory getting too hot

    is the card oc'ed?

I had a problem similar to this with my old ATI card and UT. Try playing with the AA and filtering settings as well as resolution and the in-game quality options. See if one of them is causing the issue then you can work from there to get rid of it.

Of course check the HL forums to see if it is a problem with the game and your card and if there is a patch/work around.

I think the 9800 cards just weird out when they are failing.
I had a 9800pro whack out on me a couple of months ago,
and it had all sorts of odd stuff going on.
Sometimes it would boot up in what looked like safe mode.
If I rebooted, it would be fine.
Then the colors started to get weird.
I started to wonder if it was the monitor.
But when I put together my new build with a 7900gt,
    the monitor was fine.

since you have the XT you have the ability to change gpu and mem speed I believe directly from the driver (if not get ati tool)...turn down the memory 10mhz and see if it makes a diff

Y'know, I have a 9600 XT, and I can use the same GPU Overdrive tool you mentioned, but for some reason the tool keeps vanishing from the Catalyst Suite. I have version 6.4, and whenever I install an upgrade the GPU Overdrive tool reappears for a few days and then vanishes again. Any idea why?

    that's really messed

no idea, I found the ati drivers to be really wonky and horrible personally, from CLI errors on a fresh install to stuff like you mentioned

try the omega ati drivers, might be a good alternative if you care about the overclocking feature
