something like this.. be it, for reminders, wakeup calls, etc.

Do you need an actual phone system hooked up to it, or does it use VOIP, or what?

    Anyone done it?

i would imagine it can do both, but sites would use voip with software designed to interface with it.

    Hm..

Anyone want to give it a shot?

I'll bust out some ideas if you bust out the coding. I actually had an idea like this in the past, and if it's easy, it might be worth persuing.

If you're not in a huge hurry, let me do some research first.

Never in a hurry. If I was in a hurry, I'd bust my ass to learn php. I just can't get my mind around any programming languages.

Though, I've gotten better at editing shit, and getting the syntax mostly down.

    Probably VoIP + wav file..

    or modem + wav file.

We do something similar in our India office, which sends out phone calls by grabbing their number in the database, and dialing. Once it picks up, it'll play the wav file.

Im sure there's a way to execute a command, to dial a number.

    Quick and simple:

    1. Get a vonage account with unlimited Outbound or anyone with unlimited outbound that you know the credentials to. \

    2. Tie the termination carrier that you made in 1 to an asterisk box.

    3. Use Asterisk API function to orginate a call.

That's it.. It's pretty simple. If you need help let me know.

I've never really done it before, but I work in the VOIP industry. I play and research this kind of stuff a lot.

I can setup a test thing for you if you want..

That would be dope. Any idea how resource or bandwidth intensive it is?

resources shouldn't be that bad.. A normal G711 call is 90K one way.. So you times that by the amount of legs (normally 2 - Down and Up). So 180k per call. Your basically just calling someone so it's like a normal voip call say in your house. On a good Xeon box or something with dual cores, you can easily put up 100 calls concurrently.

If you get bigger than that, I would suggest moving to something better than asterisk and you should be able to run a hell of a lot more calls than that.

Good information. I'm not really even thinking that big yet. How about incoming calls though? Could an eight-hundred number be set up to call a computer system, and basically have your own voicemail type thing? Or would that be an entirely different and more complex system?

It's not a complex thing, but it costs you a lot more money. 8yy numbers average to be about 2 to 3 cents a minute depending on where you get them. So if you got a lot of minutes, it could get pricey.

Setting up Voicemail is not that difficult, it does get pretty complicated after a while. Nothing outrageous, but their are companies that are revenue model is soley based on Voicemail accounts. Adding features to that voicemail account is where programming comes in.

I'll put something together tomorrow for you. If you want hit me up on AIM.. Its the same as my username here. I can give you the scoop and let you know how its running. I'd like to hear more about your ideas.

i should have gone on OT when I attempted to set this up for a company I worked for to schedule deliveries. oh, well my old boss scrapped it so he could keep banging the intern that was making the calls. good job, though, I love this troll-minimized forum :)
