Just read a blog posting about a guy that makes about 2 grand a month by selling his stuff on stock photo websites (link).
If you do, what suggestions do you have? I looked through my "portfolio" of shots I've taken and few if any could be used as "stock". I may set up a light box and take a few pictures, see if they sell. As expensive as photography is, it'd sure be nice to earn a little back from it.

you can make money off stock photos, but you would have to upload massive amounts. I believe you only get a few cents per download :S

if you have some really good stuff, I've seen selective signed prints from some non-Ansel Adams level guys go for like 500-800$ a pop. 30x20 prints.

you could also go the celebrity route and take stuff like parties, concerts, sports, porn, etc and make some money off selling those to newspapers and whatnot.

though it's pretty hard to make a living from photography unless your the guy who made 200,000 cause you took a picture of a celebrity baby no one has seen for 3 months :p

ive made about $50 bucks from stock photos in the last year.
I only have like 10 point and shoot photos up on one site.
    Nothing really great either.

I looked around and if you take really great model shots or "business" advertising photos you can start making decent money from them.
Its not easy tho and your efforts would be better spent trying to get gigs with companies IMO.

I sell Drag Racing Photos at major events.

It's lucrative but not enough to live off.

I may just set up a light box and take pictures of random crap on rainy days. It can't hurt to have some shots earning a little at a time. Who knows, I may get lucky.

Find a niche market and work off that. I cover local SCCA Solo II autoX and other motorsport events and make some $$$ off those photos.

If you're trying to make money I would focus on shooting events. Try to get a contract with a local HS sports team and take photos during games to sell to parents, or something of that like. If you really want to make money you gotta strike some deals and/or advertise and market your services.

and this thread shows why the market for stock is shit these days.

    Mirco ftmfl.

if you're good, sign up with alamy or some other medium agency. you can't just go and sign up with getty/corbis, so you want to find some place that will eventually lead you in.

you can sell500 downloads at micro or 1 at a large agency and get the same pay.

getting model and property releases, understanding sensitive issues consideration, valid contracts, and how to shoot for stock is key. you don't just go shoot and upload. you have to see whats available and understand what sells. you have to be aware of everything in the frame, and how you frame it makes a big diference. a magazine cover, cd cover, double page spread etc all require different crops/composition
